When we live a busy life taking time for rest can feel lazy and with so much to do, isn’t it just too much of a luxury?
Rest is an essential part of our wellbeing deeply rooted in our physiology. Human beings aren’t designed to expend energy continuously and rest isn’t in fact idleness but the key to a better life.
Without rest our underlying stress levels gradually build up reducing our ability to handle demands or cope with changes we weren’t anticipating. We stop acting in accordance with what we know and instead act in accordance with the baseline level of stress in our nervous system.
Would you rather respond well to the demands life presents you with or are you resigned to feeling frazzled, flying off the handle or feeling the need to withdraw?
Our methods of relaxation include Mindfulness, Meditation, iRest Yoga Nidra, breathing techniques and Restorative Yoga practices which are steeped in the wisdom of ancient traditions and proven effective by the lasted scientific research.
Each is introduced in an accessible, understandable way and broken down into steps you’ll find easy to adopt and integrate into your everyday routine.
Improve Happiness & Health
Regular rest calms the nervous system lowering levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline in your body. At the same time, it can increase your levels of feel-good chemicals, like endorphins and serotonin. This can reduce your anxiety levels even re-wiring your brain so that the neural pathways responsible for fear and anxious thoughts are weakened. It may increase your capacity for happiness and reduce your propensity towards negativity.
Some forms of rest have been shown to turn on genes that protect you from pain, high blood pressure and infertility. It reduces inflammation and boosts your immune system and practised regularly rest and relaxation can help you stay calm and centered even in the face of demanding circumstances.
Be More Productive
Even when we’re not working our brain is active, the default network is ‘online’ picking over old problems, seeking new information and developing possible solutions. Taking time out to rest can help to recharge and refresh tired minds and bodies increasing your concentration power, your memory and increasing your productivity.
Mindfulness, Meditation and iRest Yoga Nidra have been linked to better focus, concentration and attention to detail. Studies have shown how they can re-wire your brain to strengthen the parts associated with attention and sensory processing. Once your brain reaches left/right brain balance your creativity is stimulated enhancing your ability to develop solutions and ideas.
Enjoy Better Relationships
Studies have shown that people who meditate regularly are more empathetic and compassionate towards other people.
When you take time to rest you are not only investing in your relationships with others but in a better relationship with yourself. Within days of beginning a short daily rest practice you will begin to feel more at ease and more able to feel thankful and happy, more accepting of your life and the people in it.
This has a ripple effect on those around you, when you are rested and calm you are more able to see the bigger picture rather than getting caught up in your own inner dialogue, less likely to react to situations and more likely to respond wisely.
What We Do
Our thoughts, emotions and beliefs are all energy which effect how we feel moment to moment, day to day.
You will be aware of times when you’ve felt sluggish and unenthusiastic only to suddenly perk up when something interesting comes along, or of times when you’ve been feeling really upbeat and energised only to become deflated by a harsh word or action of someone around you. That is energy in action.
Underneath all of this is our natural state of wellbeing, a state which never changes, which is always available to you and which can be accessed through deep rest.
Steeped in the wisdom of ancient traditions and proven effective by latest scientific research the practices I teach include: Meditation, Mindfulness, Yin and Restorative Yoga, iRest Yoga Nidra and sleep training for insomnia. If you haven’t come across Yin or Restorative Yoga they are both primarily practised on the floor with each pose being held for several minutes. In Yin the body stretches to release held tension, in Restorative the body is held or supported by props to enable a sinking in to deep states of rest. All practices encourage ways of releasing stress and tension, remaining present in the moment and connecting to yourself, your life purpose, to others and to the world around you.
Whether you want to maintain a sense of equilibrium or reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, soothe your body systems as you slip into a state of restorative relaxation or feel invigorated by time spent in nature you’ll find it in our classes, workshops and private sessions.
To keep these restorative and rejuvenating practices accessible we hold a number of weekly drop-in classes payable individually or through a five class pass. In classes using props where space is limited pre-booking is essential.
We regularly hold workshops in and around Towcester, Brackley, Banbury, Northampton and Bedford. These are delivered in an accessible and supportive manner with one intention in mind - that you enjoy an experience of deep rest while acquiring tools and techniques for self management and care when back in the flow of everyday life.
